The liturgical ordinary of St.Victor of Paris: Critical edition and commentary

St.-Victor of Paris abbey, founded in 1113 by Louis VI, after Guillaume de Champeaux retreated next to the Bièvre in 1108, was and is still carefully studied by many historians, essentially from such angles as history of thought, of theology or of medieval schools. However, its liturgy has rarely been examined yet. The edition of its liturgical ordinary, though incomplete, as only the sanctoral is offered in our work, aims for completing the coutumier’s edition by Luc Jocqué and Louis Milis. The initial well conserved ordinary manuscript (Paris, BnF, ms lat. 14506), was composed at the very end of the 12th century or at the very beginning of the 13th century. It was used and modified until the 15th century. Three other ordinaries were copied at St.-Victor during the 15th and 16th centuries, all steming from the original manuscript. The first part of our work provides a codicological analysis of the first manuscript, as well as an explaining of St.-Victor’s own liturgical feasts. In the second part, the critical edition itself can be found, with indices to complete it.

L’abbaye de Saint-Victor de Paris, fondée en 1113 par Louis VI suite à l’installation en 1108 au bord de la Bièvre d’un ermitage par Guillaume de Champeaux, a été et est toujours l’objet d’une attention soutenue de la part des historiens, mais essentiellement du point de vue de l’histoire de la pensée, des écoles et de la théologie. Sa liturgie n’a jusqu’à présent fait l’objet que peu d’attentions. L’édition de son ordinaire, ici partielle, puisque seul le sanctoral est proposé, vise à compléter l’édition donnée par Luc Jocqué et Louis Milis de son coutumier. Le manuscrit initial de l’ordinaire, bien conservé (Paris, BnF, ms lat. 14506), a été composé à la toute-fin du XIIe siècle ou au tout-début du XIIIe siècle. Il fut ensuite remanié jusqu’au XVe siècle. Trois autres ordinaires furent ensuite copiés à Saint-Victor, aux XVe et XVIe siècles, tous dérivant du manuscrit initial. Notre travail propose une analyse codicologique du premier manuscrit, ainsi qu’une explicitation des grandes fêtes liturgiques propres à Saint-Victor dans un premier tome. Dans un second tome, il contient l’édition critique proprement dite. Des tables complètent celle-ci.
