The duke, the castellan and the territory

Le duc, le châtelain et le territoire

Résumé

Once at the core of the Dukes of Savoy’s princely power, the châtellenie of Allinges-Thonon was, during the first third of the sixteenth century, no more than a small financial unit in the huge financial apparatus of the duchy, under the authority of the Courts of Auditors. Charles II, Duke of Savoy, and his court only stayed there very briefly, preferring Turin, Chambéry or Annecy. The châtelain of Thonon, or more often his lieutenant, oversaw the management of this territorial institution in the name of the Dukes of Savoy. As a local officer representing the Duke, the châtelain juggled financial, administrative judiciary, and military obligations. Every year, he submitted a report of his activities to the Chamber of Auditors in Chambéry, which represents a precious and rich source on the management of the châtellenie, and what it meant to be a châtelain during the first third of the sixteenth century during the transition from medieval to early modern. In an area deeply undermined by the conflict started in the 1520” between Geneva and Charles II, this study aims to understand the duke’s ability to control this area through an ideal territorial institution: the châtellenie.
