Résumé

Notarial archives have long been recognized as a privileged source in many historical works. This study is an attempt to integrate the three successively rediscovered components of notarial history: the notaries as a group defined by their corporate organization, the notarial acts, and finally the person of the notary himself. The notarial deeds show how the notary is a real pivot of everyday society, giving authenticity and legal value to the great events structuring families and the succession of generations, as well as to local economic life, while at the same time bringing together individuals from all social backgrounds. The exercise of his profession cannot fail to give the notary himself a privileged place in social life. The originality of the research presented here lies above all in the criteria of time and place selected. The choice of a chronological interval from 1770 to 1820, which at first glance is particularly full of upheavals that affected the whole of society, gives a new dimension to the observation and understanding of the evolutions that characterized the modalities of access to the profession, the activity of its representatives, and their place among their contemporaries. The readings and the examination of sources have gradually shaped a well-defined corpus of 108 notaries who practiced between these two dates in a precise environment: a rural region from which emerge small towns and cities, in the northeast corner of the Dauphiné. This portion of the bailliage of Vienne corresponds, after the various revolutionary reorganizations, to the four northernmost cantons of the arrondissement of La Tour-du-Pin, in the new department of Isère. The examination of the three components must therefore be done taking into account the context and the regional and local particularities. The Dauphiné, and particularly the Viennois, were marked by political events, whether it be the pre-Revolution of 1788, the Great Fear, the influence of the federalist movement, or the application of the Terror by more than zealous representatives. The reconstruction of careers and lineages often leads back to at least the beginning of the Enlightenment and into the mid-nineteenth century. It was indeed important to place the observations in a longer time frame. During one of the most unstable periods in French history, the angles of study chosen must allow for a global assessment of the changes that occurred, both as a result of the various revolutionary governments and after the return of the sovereigns whose regime had been overthrown and whose society had been destroyed by the Revolution.
