Hats, hatters and other headgear in Paris, 1550-1660

Chapeaux, chapeliers et autres couvre-chefs à Paris, 1550-1660

Résumé

The wearing of headgear is a constant in the costume of the modern era. The Parisian case is obvious because of the reputation of its hat production and the institutional and technical changes that affected the hat industry at that time. The hatmakers constitute a complex and heterogeneous community, both professionally and privately, in a difficult religious and political context. But the study of headgear in the modern period cannot be limited to the hat, nor to its manufacture and marketing. Parisians had at their disposal other headgear, just as much used as the hat, such as the bonnet, the chaperon, the cap, the béguin, the skullcap or the chrémeau, which they embellished with those indispensable trimmings such as feathers and signs. It is also necessary to take into account the gestures and the symbolic and social discourse on these objects, which then appear much less anodyne and anecdotal in this society attached to appearances, and to the notion of honor.
